December has been a bit sneaky, tiptoeing up and tapping me on the shoulder. ‘Tis the season for giving, but it’s also a good time to start thinking about consumption. While the big box stores promote happiness in the newest electronic tablet, game, or phone, the volunteers at DIY Studio refuse blind obedience. We call it like we see it and know that owning more and spending more often doesn’t make us happier. We know that the season is about spending time with loved ones, sharing thoughtful and useful gifts as a form of thanks, and cutting down on the haphazard consuming that leaves our homes cluttered and unmanageable. So what’s the solution to spend less green and green up our lives? Let me introduce you to our 12 Days of Reuse campaign on youtube.
Through our 12 Days of Reuse video series we hope to promote handmade reuse gifts. Here’s why you should consider reuse gifts this holiday season:
- it’s affordable
- it’s easy (when you have good instructions)
- it’s good for your ego (look what I can do!)
- recipients love the thought and time that went into making it
- it’s unique (something you can’t pick up in the store)
- it’s good for the environment to reuse and upcycle
- it’s not made in China (and probably doesn’t contain lead!)
Check out the videos (one uploaded everyday) and I’ll give you step-by-step instruction to DIY success. You’ll feel so proud of your project and you’ll save some of your hard earned cash for experiences rather than objects. So take a deep breath and jump right in! And if you need any help come down to the studio. We are here for any creative support you might need. Happy Holidays!
