Sharing your Bounty

While working on our Neighborhood Association’s newsletter, I came across an article submission from Neighborhood Harvest of Salem of Salem. Their mission is fabulous and I wanted to share their project with you.

So many times I’ve heard friends tell me that their fruit trees have produced too much for their family. Or elderly neighbors need help harvesting fruit. Now there is a simple solution to help our community. Neighborhood Harvest has created a system where you can register your fruit trees with them and they’ll connect you with harvesters who will harvest the unused fruit and disperse the fruit to hungry families. If you don’t have fruit bearing trees, you can then sign up to help harvest the fruit.

Kudos to those citizens for seeing the need and organizing this group. It’s inspiring to see neighbors participate and take an active role in their community.

I think this little organization is the brainchild of my friend, Lisa, who just lives a few blocks away from both of us. I think it’s a great idea! I’m a little in awe of Lisa…she has two little boys and gets a LOT done!

One more tidbit about this endeavor: It’s another great project of Friends of Salem Saturday Market! 🙂
