DIY Banner

Want to get your message out? You need a banner! Sure you can buy vinyl banners, but there is something very commercial and impersonal about them. Time for a little DIY!

These are the things I used to make my banner:

  • Freezer paper
  • Felt
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Printer
  • Copy Paper
  • Computer
  • Photo Editing Software
  • Exacto Knife
  • Self-healing mat
  • Paint Brush
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Iron

Once you have your supplies, figure out what you’ll want on your banner. And also figure out your banner size. Cut your felt to size. Then create a new file in photoshop or photo editing software. Add the logo/text you want into that file and make sure it fits how you’d like.

Then using guides, make guides at 8.5 and 11 intervals (making a grid on your banner file) until all the surface area is grided out. Then copy each grid and paste it into a new file. Then make sure you print this out. Continue until you have all the grids printed.

Now it’s time to tape all the pieces of the grids together. Tape the logo/text to the matte side of the freezer paper. The shinny side of the freezer paper should be down. Put your self-healing mat down to protect the surface of your table. Then cut out the areas where you want the paint to go.

Make sure to save the insides of letters like “o”, “e” and “a”. You’ll need to iron them down later.

Now iron down the freezer paper (and recycle the copy paper).

Get our your acrylic paint. You will need to use fabric paint if you plan on washing it.

Paint away! Make sure to dab at the stencil and not get your brush under the freezer paper.

You can see some areas may peel up. Just be careful when you paint.
Pull of the freezer paper and ohh and ahhh at your work! Well done!
